Kentucky basketball program's "Hoops for Haiti" telethon raised more than $1 million Sunday

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Kentucky basketball program's "Hoops for Haiti" telethon raised more than $1 million Sunday for relief efforts in the wake of last week's 7.0-magnitude earthquake in the impoverished nation.

Callers to the telethon and fans online donated more than $525,000. UK coach John Calipari and a group of local business leaders will donate an additional $500,000 to the Red Cross via United Way of the Bluegrass.

"I've been saying for months that Big Blue Nation is full of 'crazies,' " Calipari said in a release. "But after Sunday's outpouring of support, I can call everyone something else: compassionate and generous."
